CCRAS - Regional Ayurveda Research Institute, Itanagar

The Regional Ayurveda Research Institute, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, was established in 1979 and has been actively engaged in Ayurvedic research, healthcare, documentation and conservation efforts related to medicinal plants in the region. The institute operates an Out Patient Department (OPD), supported by a biochemistry and pathological laboratory, offering treatment for various ailments, particularly focusing on non-communicable diseases since its OPD services began in 1980. Additionally, the institute has a Panchakarma unit for male and female patients, providing specialized Ayurvedic therapies. To ensure the safety and efficacy of Ayurvedic medicines, the institute also houses a peripheral pharmacovigilance center, which monitors and assesses potential adverse reactions or side effects of Ayurvedic formulations. The institute actively conducts clinical research projects to evaluate the effectiveness of Ayurvedic treatments in various disease conditions. Apart from this, the Survey of Medicinal Plants Unit (SMPU) is engaged in Medico Ethno Botanical Surveys (MEBS) and documentation of Local Health Traditions (LHTs) and Ethno Medico Practices (EMPs) of tribal communities in the North-East region. Additionally, the institute has developed a Medicinal Plants Garden spanning approximately 8 acres which is dedicated to the cultivation, conservation, and sale of medicinal plant saplings of Ayurvedic importance. Strengthening healthcare accessibility, the North-East Healthcare Programme (NEHCP) was initiated in 2016, establishing Ayurveda Health Centers (AHCs) across Arunachal Pradesh. Each AHC is equipped with a Senior Research Fellow (Ayurveda), Pharmacist/Staff Nurse, and MTA to provide essential healthcare services. Currently, five AHCs are operational at Doimukh, Sagalee, Namsai, Seppa, and Tezu, offering free medical consultation, Ayurvedic medicines, blood sugar and hemoglobin testing, and IEC material distribution to promote holistic healthcare.
